Watoto Care
Mix high levels of poverty and the main government hospital facility being overwhelmed by the present need, you find a lot of children living with cerebral palsy not only living in debilitating situations but also not receiving the proper therapy care needed to help them live healthy lives. That was the reality encountered by our our Co-founder Tina and main partner Maria when they first engaged a disability group located in Ukunda.
The question we asked is what can we possibly do to help such a huge need. Out of this the therapy group was born.
Zena, an Occupational Therapist by profession, works with us to offer therapy sessions to 10 to 12 children on a weekly basis.
On average each child needs about 45min to 1hr session of physiotherapy. At the government hospital it averages 15min because of the sheer numbers of children brought to be attended
Even though it may feel like trying to put out an inferno with water from a straw, we still push on. The parents of these children show a lot of strength and commitment to help better the lives of their loved ones.
We salute the parents of these young ones, who are their primary care givers. Most are doing it alone and due to the nature and severity of the affected children it’s hard for the care givers to have conventional jobs. For that to be a reality, they need to leave their children under the care of another.
That is the new space we find ourselves in. We asked ourselves how can we empower the care givers in not only offering emotional support but also in helping them find ways to provide for their families yet still have their loved ones taken care of well. We ask for your prayers as we look into the possibility of setting up a day care for children affected by cerebral palsy.
